Here are Elly's observations about toads from this book.
1. They only travel in rain to stay moist.
2. Toads sing in the pond in the spring.
3. They have tadpoles in the pond.
4. Sometimes tadpoles can be tackled by beetles.
5. Fish, other frogs, and some birds eat tadpoles.
6. Toad tadpoles grow very fast (frog ones don't).
7. Toads have a tongue that is connected to the front of their mouth and flips out and in to catch food.
8. They catch their prey with their sticky tongue.
9. Toads pull their skin off inside out and eat it.
10. Toads hop slowly compared to frogs.
11. Mr. Blacksnake was going to eat Mr. Toad.
12. Mr. Toad digs with his back feet and backs into his 'winter quarters'.
13. Mr. Toad has a big bubble of skin in this throat that helps him sing.
14. Toads are usually in the pond in early spring only.
Butterflies
1. They 
have a layer of skin that turns into the chrysalis and then hardens.
2. Butterflies stand on a leaf or hang from a leaf to mate by putting their abdomens together.
3. They have scales on their wings that trap the air so they can take off easier.4. They eat nectar, but when they are caterpillars they eat leaves.
5. Butterflies are usually bright colors and they are poisonous or copy other poisonous butterflies.
Moths
1. Moths s
pin silk cocoons.
2. Moths are attracted to light.
3. Moths have antenna that are like feathers.
4. They usually have dim colors not bright ones.
5. Some moths only eat as caterpillars. They don't eat when they become moths.
For our 106 Days of Creation Science Curriculum, we read this Burgess Book. Here's what Elly learned and commented upon.
1. Buster Bear likes berries.
2. He is afraid of Farmer Brown’s Boy.
3. He didn’t like the pail on his neck.
4. Farmer Brown’s boy was learning to be a philosopher—to be happy instead of mad, it could have been worse.
5. He likes fish and he goes to the pond.
6. He has clothes on, but real bears don’t.
7. He can talk, but real bears can’t.
8. Chatterer the Squirrel is scared of Buster Bear.
9. Chatterer climbs up tall trees…so does Buster Bear.
10. Chatterer didn’t know Buster Bear could climb.
11. Chatterer jumped from the top of the tree and he stretched out his arms, legs and tail so he wouldn’t fall so hard.
12. Sammy Jay and Blacky Crow they screamed because they like excitement.
13. Sammy Jay is blue and Blacky the Crow is black.
14. Sammy and Blacky like to make people not happy.
15. Buster got scared when everyone crowded around him and laughed at him.
16. Buster Bear growled and tried to get out of the pail.
17. Everyone left because they were scared of him because he lost his temper.
18. Blacky the Crow has clothes on…real crows don’t.
19. Buster Bear eats berries that aren’t his and someone picked them because he didn’t think of someone else.
20. Farmer Brown’s Boy likes blueberry pie.
